Just rice and water would be cheap, for example, but it wouldn’t be sustainable nutrition. Assume also that there is no need for variety, other than getting a balanced diet.
The strategy could include using coupons, gardening, or getting things in quantity, but should not include things like handouts (begging, welfare, food stamps), scavenging (dumpsters, foraging in the forest), or stealing.

Fresh is best. Whatever is in season is usually at its peak nutritiously and cheaper than out of season products. You can live really well on freshly produced eggs, fruit and vegetables from the garden, or local greengrocer. Add to that some iron in the form of red meat or beans, some cereals and grains and your diet is pretty good. Buy your dried goods in bulk( beans, flour, rice) and try freezing or dehydrating excess. Buy a box of tomatoes that are a little overripe and make some sauce in bulk and freeze in batches,eg.Trade with friends, they might give you a dozen eggs for a bunch of silverbeet.Peasant food is fabulously simple fresh food. Try some greek bean recipes. Doing it cheap is eating smart.

When my friend was pregnant she was having a hell of a time keeping her food down. Her doctor reccomended a baked bean sandwich. Apparently it contained every vitamin & mineral that she needed for herself AND a growing baby. So that’s what she lived on (plus a piece of fruit), and she gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
So I would propably live on canned baked beans(40 cents), bread(99 cents), the apples from my tree, and my chook’s eggs (both free). I would propably be the healthiest person in my neighbourhood.
