Which name do you like better: Amos or Victor?
Amos and Victor are both names of writers known for their work as social reformers and humanitarians. Amos Bronson Alcott was an American writer who formed an “alternative school” which had all sorts of strange ideas, such as teaching creativity, limiting corporal punishment, encouraging physical education, giving some informatin on basic sex education, and allowing an African American to join the school. He helped fugitive slaves to escape, formed a commune, and advocated a vegetarian diet, temperance, meditation, and sustainable living. He was derided as a 19th century nutjob, and was never able to support himself above the poverty line.
Victor Hugo was a French writer who later in life became involved in politics and made a name as a human rights activist. He campaigned against the death penalty and social injustice, and in favor of freedom of speech. He convinced the government of Queen Victoria to spare the lives of six Irish people convicted of terrorist activities and his influence was credited in the removal of the death penalty from the constitutions of Geneva, Portugal and Colombia. Like Amos Alcott, he was a freethinker in religion, but unlike Alcott, instead of being a vegetarian, he was forced to eat zoo animals during a siege by the Prussian army. He was a national hero, and upon his death was given a state funeral with more than 2 million people in attendance.

Victor is a very dignified name, and if you gave a child that name, you could call him Vic! I like Amos Bronson Alcott as a person, but the name Amos makes me think of a redneck for some reason.
